What was the reformation?
A religious, political and cultural movement that questioned the Roman Catholic Church
What complaints did Martin Luther have with the Catholic Church?
-ordinary people couldn’t understand church services (they weren’t in English, they were in Latin)
-poor people couldn’t afford indulges
-church was too rich
-the priests and other religious leaders didn’t lead a very ‘holy’ life
Why did Henry VIII create the Church of England?
-money:needed money for the French war
-power:pope is more powerful than Henry (pope didn’t allow divorce)
-love:wanted a son and wanted to divorce Catherine of Aragon to marry a younger women (Anne Boleyn)
