How does geography affect where people settle and develop civilizations?
The place where people settle needs to be able to meet their needs. They need to be able to farm, get water, adapt and modify.
How did geography and their ability to adapt/modify allow them to be successful?
They were able to create calendars due to flooding, they were able to dig mines to get resources. They were able to build houses and use the fruits grown around them to survive.

Humans depend on the natural environment for their basic needs(Food,Shelter,Clothing)
Adapt
when humans make changes to better adapt to their environment(Heat and AC)
Modify
people modify/make changes to their environment to meet their needs(dams, mines,irrigation)
