what are the ABCDEs of pediatric emergencies?
Airway (can they pass air to cry/talk?) Breathing (rate? accessory muscles?) Circulation (alert/pink?) Disability (level of consciousness, AVPU?) Exposuer (detailed head to toe exam)
what does AVPU stand for?
level of responsiveness
- Alert
- Voice
- Pain
- Unresponsive
what are most arrests in pediatrics VS adults?
pediatrics: respiratory (followed by fatigue and failure)
adults: cardiac
what happens in pediatric respiratory failure?
kids compensate by working hard to breathe, then tire out and fail
what is “lethargy” in a medical sense?
abnormally drowsy and unable to appropriately interact with their envirnoment
- sign of severe illness in children
- DOES NOT MEAN TIRED
what is “irritability” in a medical sense?
inconsolable, no matter what
- sign of severe illness
- DOES NOT MEAN CRABBY
if a 3 week old has normal vitals, looks fine, but has a fever, what should you do?
urgently discuss with the attending, b/c neonates don’t have a developed immune system to fight off the probable infection
-can go from alive to dead in minutes
what are the most common fractures in kids?
buckle fractures
-it looks like a little bump on X-ray
where should you worry about choking hazards lodging?
thoracic inlet and esophageal sphincter
what should you look for in adolescents?
