Unit 1 (Part 3) Flashcards
Polymers (molecules)
Large molecules comprised of repeating subunits which are monomers.
Dehydration Reaction
Two monomers bonded by loss of water.
Hydrolitic Reaction
Bonds between monomers by addition of water.
Carbohydrate (polymer)
Comprised of Monosaccharide, Disacchride, and Polysaccharide (monomers)
Monosacchride
Single sugar.
Disacchride
Double sugar.
Polysacchride
More than two sugars.
Lipids (polymer)
A molecule (polymer) that is soluble in water and is comprised of carbon and hydrogen.
Saturated fat
Lipids saturated with hydrogen. It’s solid at room temp.
Unsaturated fats
Lipids not saturated with hydrogen. It’s not solid at room temp, also has double bond with carbon.
Phospholipids
Are two fatty acids + phosphate group
Proteins (polymer)
Are made of twenty amino acids (monomer), they are chains of polypeptide. They can change shape to change function.
Nucleic acid (polymer)
DNA and RNA made of of nucleotides (monomer).
DNA
Deoxyrobonucleic acid
RNA
Ribonucleic acid
Nucleotides
Made up of Phosphate group + sugar + nitrogenous base
Nitrogenous bases
Cytosine, Adenine, Thymine, Guanine
