Figurative Devices
The use of words in an imaginative manner, with a meaning different from their literal meaning
Allusion
A reference to something well known
Juxtaposition
Two opposite ideas placed close together for the purpose of a contrasting effect
Paradox
A statement that seems contradictory but contains truth
Oxymoron
Two opposite words put together
Hyperbole
An exaggeration for a dramatic effect
Understatement
deliberately expresses an idea as less important than it actually is
Imagery
Words or phrases that appeal to any sense or combination of senses; makes an object more ‘concrete’
Symbol
An object, person, situation or action that has a deeper meaning
Simile
A comparison between two objects using like, as, or than
Metaphor
A comparison between two things without using like or as
Analogy
Extended metaphor
Personification
When non-living things are given human traits or abilities
Pathetic Fallacy
A type of personification; where non-living things are given human emotions
Metonymy
A figure of speech in which one thing is represented by another that is commonly and often physically associated with it
Synecdoche
A figure of speech in which a part of something is used to represent the whole or reverse
