Unit 1: Nature of Science Quiz 1 Flashcards
range
the smallest number subtracted from the largest number in the set of numbers
mode
the number that occurs the most
median
put in order from least to greatest or greatest to least and find the number in the middle
mean
all of the numbers in a set added together and then divided by the amount of numbers in the set
law
always happens, doesn’t change (has been proven)
theory
an accepted hypothesis
hypothesis
an educated guess
constant variable
the variable that does not change during an experiment (aka as the controlled variable)
dependent variable
the variable that you measure or observe
graphed on the y axis
independent variable
the one condition that you change in an experiment (graphed on the x axis)
variables
a variable is any factor that can be controlled or changed in an experiment
Quantitative
- deals with numbers
- data which can be measured
- length, height, area, volume, weight, speed, time, temp., humidity, sound levels, cost, members, ages, etc.
- Quantitative= quantity
Qualitative
- deals with descriptions
- data can be observed but not measured
- colors, textures, smells, taste, appearance, beauty, etc.
- qualitative= quality
observation
using one or more of the 5 senses to gather info, may include the use of equipment
inference
the development of ideas based on observations (guessing)
