nation state
sovereign state in which most of its population is united by certain factors
- has a: population, territory, sovereignty and a government
ethnic nationalism

- the basis is shared ethnicity, culture and language
- members of an ethnic nation may choose to create a nation-state based on their collective identity
country
physical borders, sovereignty, single federal government
nation
a place where people share a similar state of mind, beliefs, language, customs, religions, traditions, culture etc.
- often exists within a country
- does not require physical borders
- does not require a government
- cannot participate in international agreements in the same way that a country/nation state can
