define film study

define frame
refers to the smallest unit of film possible
whats a shot
continuous, unedited piece of film of any length.
whats a scene
a series of shots that together form a complete episode or unit of narrative.
whats a take
a take refers to the time a shot begun to when it ends
define parallel action
parallel action is a narrative strategy that cross cuts between 2 or more separate actions to make it seem they are happening at the same time
define objective camera
scene is shot from the view of a spectator watching
define subjective camera
scene is shot from the view point of a character directly involved in the action
define off-screen(OS)
words heard from the actors outside of the view of the camera
define voice over(VO)
words said off screen that are heard over the visual shot.
define hook
the opening part of a film that gets the viewers attention

the printed lines at the bottom of the screen to describe the setting or foreign words
define set
the actual construction where its being filmed

variation of the long shot showing a characters feet up.

a shot from the mid-shin or mid-thigh up
whats a close shot
a shot where the view is close to the action, not as far as a close up
define close up
focuses on a subjects face (details, expressions, and reactions) or sometimes small objects
define extreme close up
a variation of the close up that singles out a face of isolated detail
whats a tracking/dolly shot
a single continuous shot made with the camera moving along the ground typically on a dolly
whats a subjective shot
a shot that is framed from a person/characters point of view.

a shot from a helicopter, plane, balloon, kite or blimp
define crane shot
a shot where a crane is used to lift the camera above the action
whats an arc shot
the subject is in the middle and the camera circles either half way or fully around them
What is a boom shot
a continuous shot that was filmed on a pole which has a camera suspended from it

what do curved lines mean
- soft, feminine, nurturing, gentle

what does a straight line represent
- masculine, strength, authority, lack of emotion
what do jagged lines convey
- make viewer feel tense and uneasy
what do horizontal lines show
- soothing, peaceful, relaxing (e.g. a horizon)
what does a vertical line represent
draw the eye upward and give a feeling of power
- inspire awe in the viewer
what does a diagonal line represent
- speed, action, movement
whats a vanishing point
converging parallel lines that move away from the viewer appear to converge at the horizon in the classic “vanishing point” phenomenon (e.g. railroad tracks seem to merge together
at an extreme distance)
what is composition
refers to the arrangement of different elements within the frame
what is story boarding
- determines the composition of each shot in a film
- decisions are made about what to include and what to leave out in a frame
whats juxtaposition
when contrasting images are placed together
- can create irony, tension, and critical thinking (e.g. flowers placed in a
gun barrel)
what is balance
the arrangement of the figures, the lighting, the sound, and movement.
whats foreground
refers to what is located closest to the viewer
whats middleground
located in the middle of the frame
whats the background
refers to what is located furthest from the
viewer
what are subsidiary details
where the viewer’s eye is drawn after the point of focus
what is internal framing
a frame within a frame of the visual such as a window or a doorway limits the point of focus
Purpose:
what is positive space
the subject in the image
what is negative space
parts of the image within the frame which are not the subject (open space in the frame) - the point of focus is surrounded by space that is purposefully left empty or uncluttered
whats montage editing
links together all of the individual shots in a movie but there is no intention of creating a continuous reality.
what is match cut dissolve
connects two shots cut together by having a character finish an action in the second shot begun in the first shot.
what is defocus
to deliberately take a shot out of focus (often to make a transition from one scene to another).
what is shallow focus
focus is clear in only one plane; the rest of
the image is blurred
whats deep focus
all areas from foreground to background are in focus.
what is soft focus
a slightly blurred shot to make the subject seem more attractive, romantic, nostalgic, or dreamlike.
whats rack focus
an on-screen focus change from an object in the foreground to an object in the background or vice versa in a single shot, to direct, shift, and steer the attention of the viewer forcibly from one subject to another; also known as selective focusing or pull focus.
whats high key lighting
most shots in the film are brightly lit (few shadows)
whats High contrast lighting or “Chiaroscuro”
“clear-dark”; the arrangements of harsh lines of light and dark elements may be used for symbolic intent or to establish an uneasy mood.
whats unmotivated lighting
intense, bright light from an unseen,
impossible source illuminating the point of focus
whats an over the shoulder shot
a shot that gives us a character’s point of view but that includes part of that character’s
shoulder or the side of the head in the shot.
