Unit 1: Measurement (N1) Flashcards
What is the SI System?
1960 international agreement set up comprehensive system of units based on metric system called the International System (le Systeme Internationale in French) or SI system.
What is measurement?
Quantitative observation
What 2 parts make up a measurement?
- the number
- the scale (units)
ex. 20 grams
Why do we need standards in measurement?
- Communicating quantities to others
- Make correct conversions and calculations
What are the 7 base units? (Quantity)
Length, Mass, Time, Temperature, Amount of Substance, Luminous Intensity, Electric Current
What are the 7 base units? (Unit & symbol)
meter(m), kilogram(kg), second(s), kelvin(K), mole(mol), candela(cd), ampere(A)
What is a quantity/property?
WHAT you are measuring
ex: length, mass, or time
What is unit?
HOW you are measuring
ex: meter, kg, or seconds
What is the difference between a quantity/property and a unit?
A quantity is WHAT you are measuring and a unit is HOW you are measuring
What is a derived unit?
A unit that is made with a combination of other units. Using multiplication or division.
ex: miles/hour = speed of our cars, cm^3 = volume, g/cm^3 = density
What is volume?
The amount of space matter occupies.
1cm^3 = 1mL
What is density?
The amount of mass in a certain volume.
d = m/v
ex: mass = kg, volume = dm^3 –> d = kg/dm^3
What is mass?
The measure of quantity of matter (kg) kilogram Measured using a balance Base unit
What is weight?
The force of gravity on an object (n) Newton Measured using a scale Derived unit
What is the difference between mass and weight?
Mass is the measure of the quantity of matter. Weight is the force of gravity on an object
