Unit 1 mcq Flashcards
What is Darwin’s descent with modification theory?
Change over time in the genetic composition of a population from generation to generation.
Who was Carolus Linnaeus?
founder of taxonomy, binomial nomenclature (genus, species), classification based on anatomy and morphology
Who was georges cuvier?
paleontologist, discovered that fossils found deeper in rock were older than fossils closer to surface, discovered empty space between rock (which was made by catastrophic events)
What was Hutton’s major idea?
that geologic change results from slow and gradual, continuous process
What was Lyell’s major ideas?
Earth’s processes occur at the same rate they did in the past (which means the earth is old), slow and subtle changes happen in organisms over time
What was the difference between LaMarkian and Darwinian views?
LaMarkian believed that the more a specific trait was used the more it would grow but Darwin believed in descent with modification
Where does genetic variation come from?
Mutation; reproduction
what evidence supports darwin’s ideas?
fossils,bird evolution,anatomical evidence,dna sequence
emergent properties result from what
the arrangement and interaction of parts within a system
what is gene expression?
the process of converting info from gene to cellular product
geonomics is what
the study of sets of genes within and between species
What are analogous structures?
Structures that are similar in function but not structure
What are homologous structures
physically similar features that serve different functions
