Unit 1 - Materials Flashcards
The 6 key material selection parameters
- Bulk Material Properties
- Surface Properties
- Non-Mechanical Properties
- Economic Properties
- Manufaturing Properties
- Aesthetic Properties
Define Bulk Mechanical Properties, with 5 examples
A physical property of the material that does not depend on its shape and size.
- Density
- Elastic Moduli
- Strength
- Creep
- Toughness
Define Surface Properties with 4 examples
The properties that affect the functional aspect of a material.
- Corrosion
- Oxidation
- Friction
- Wear
Define Non-Mechanical Bulk Properties with 4 examples
Properties that don’t relate to the physical behaviour of the material.
- Thermal
- Electrical
- Optical
- Magnetic
What are the aspects needed to consider with Economic Properties (4)
- Are the materials inexhaustible?
- Are the sensitive in the public eye?
- Is it local and sustainable?
- Where can the material be supplied from?
What needs to be considered for the Manufacturing Properties of a material
How sensitive the material is to the manufacturing process. And how the material properties will influence the manufacturing process
Classification of Solids
An aggregate of matter having a definite volume and shape. They can resist deformation and are capable of sustaining a load without suffering permanent change in shape
Classification of Liquids
Have no intrinsic shape and cannot resist deformation.
They are capable of transmitting or sustaining an applied static shear stress.
Difference in classifying a liquid and gas
Liquids have definite volume and no intrinsic shape, gases occupy all space given to them.
