Unit 1 - Marathon Runner Flashcards
Disruption of _____ negatively impacted the relationship between nervous and excretory system
Homeostasis; drinking too much water->ur brain cannot send the right signals to the kidneys to release water, causing them to swell -> coma
________ plays a big role in nerve impulses (signals) for feedback mechanisms and cellular homeostasis
Sodium!! Without salt our brain cannot WORK meaning our kidneys do not work
In order to have healthy sodium levels, excess water is removed by the ______ system
EXCRETORY!! When the brain feels we have too much water, it tells the big back kidneys to start DOING THEIR JOB!!!
________ system uses signals to control water levels and communicate with other organs (i.e kidneys)
NERVOUS!! This consists of the brain and NERVES!
Give an example of a negative feedback mechanism that includes excretory and nervous system
OSMOREGULATION!! -Brain (nervous system) sends signals thru nerves to the kidney (excretory system) when it senses we drank too much water, kidney filters out extra water. If we are dehydrated, brain sends signal to make us feel thirsty so that we drink water.
What would happen without the osmoregulation negative feedback mechanism? (how we balance water)
Our bodies will have too much water, and too little salt -> brain cells swell, causing us to go into a coma
What happened to the marathon runner?
0358 drank too much water during marathon and her kidneys didnt filter it properly. This made her have a lot of extra water, which made her brain swell.
What type of solution/ environment is TOO much water on the outside?
Hypotonic environment (water keeps moving into cell until it pops, because water moves from high to low concentration)
Whats ur proof that her coma was caused by brain swelling?
Her sodium level as recorded in the med tent was 130 mEq/L. The average is 135-145, so shes below average. All her other stats are fine (such as oxygen levels) so the only thing that makes sense is her low sodium level
Why did her brain swell?
High water intake caused a lot of water to go into her brain cells (osmosis, water goes from high to low concentrations) which made them swell (get a lot bigger)
