Imagery
Sensory details used to make a work vivid. These details appear to the senses.
Metaphor
Implied or stated comparison between 2 unlike things.
Extended metaphor
A comparison used throughout the whole work
Implied metaphor
Does not directly state that one thing is another
Dead metaphor
A comparison that has become so commonplace that it seems more literal than figurative
Mixed metaphor
Use of 2 or more inconsistent metaphors on one expression (makes no sense if taken literally)
Allusion
A brief reference to a person, event, or place. These things can be real or fake
Satire
Employs wit to ridicule a subject
Paradox
Something that seems self contradictory but which has valid meaning
Rhyme
Exact repetition of sounds of 2 or more words
Couplet
2 consecutive lines of poetry that rhyme
Tone
Authors attitude towards his subject
Style
Distinctive handling of language
Conceit
A kind of metaphor that makes a comparison between 2 startlingly different things
Diction
A writer’s choice of words, particularly for clarity, effectiveness, and precision
