UNIT 1 LEARNING AIM C1 Flashcards
What’s the main purpose of the 💓?
to pump blood and carry 02+nutrients
what is atherosclerosis?
When fatty substances build up in arteries causing them to narrow
what can atherosclerosis lead to?
leads to HBP - increases the change of heart attack and stroke
loses elasticity in blood vessels - the heart has to pump harder- causes HBP
what is angina?
when fatty deposits break away and causes blockages(full blockage causes heart attack)
What are the risk factors associated with cardiovascular diseases?
family history of heart problems ethnic background poorly controlled diabetes high blood pressureQ obesity smoking lack of exercise
what nervous systems depend on the senses?
nerves
spinal cord
brain
What do nervous tissues do?
allows a person to receive stimuli(taste&touch) and process information
What’s an example of a negative stimuli experience?
TOUCH- stand on a sharp nail TASTE- cutting your gum and tasting blood SMELL- smell baby poo HEAR- a child screaming SIGHT- Donald trump
whats an example of a positive stimuli experience?
TOUCH- touching a newborn TASTE- eating fresh watermelon SMELL- freshly cooked biscuits HEAR- birds singing SIGHT- Beyonce
whats part of brain decline?
short term memory, reaction time&performances
Different aspects of the brain decline at different rates
reaction time&performances- nerve impulses slow down so takes longer to react and perform
short term memory+skills&abilitly- declines at the ’80s
whats conditions make it hard to analyse brain function in older people?
strokes
depression
underactive thyroid
whats happens to blood flow to the brain when you’re older?
blood flow decreases
maybe a result of brain cells&impairing mental functions - increases the risk of dementia
(physical+mental exercise slow down the process)
what happens when nervous tissues degeneration?
decreased sensation
slower reflexes
a tendency to be clumsy
what is osteoarthritis?
is a degenerative disease
pain of joints due to thin cartilage
whats does osteoarthritis cause?
pain
stiffness in joints
loss of flexibility
(show between late 40 and 75)
whos more likely to have osteoarthritis?
overweight,
having multiple injuries in the same area
women are more likely to
how does osteoarthritis happen?
OSTEOARTHRITIS IS CAUSED BY CARTILAGE BECOMING THIN.
CARTILAGE PROVIDES A CUSHION BETWEEN 2 BONES. AS THE BONES RUB AGAINST EACH OTHER, THE CARTILAGE RUBS AWAY AND BECOMES THIN. THIS CAN CAUSE PAIN AND SWELLING AT THE JOINT.
why do energy requirements change when you’re old?
energy requirements change - person moves slower and is not physically active
means that energy requirements decrease like carbohydrates and things increase like protein and calcium
(protein - repair cells&tissues
calcium -bones strong
why are older people more likely to get malnutrition?
because the absorption of foods in the bloodstream slows down
what does an older person need to ensure to have sufficient amounts in vitamins and minerals?
CALCIUM – DAIRY – STRONG BONES AND TEETH
VITAMIN D – SUNLIGHT – HELPS ABSORB THE CALCIUM INTO THE BLOODSTREAM
VITAMIN C – GOOD IMMUNITY
IRON – GREEN LEAFY VEG – ENERGY LEVELS
why do elderly people not eat enough fruit and vegetables?
expensive to buy
inability to eat or prepare it
not be able to go shop independently
why do elderly people not have enough water?
not being steady on feet
bed-bound
why is it important for the elderly to have water?
WATER IS NEEDED FOR FOOD DIGESTION AND NUTRIENT ABSORPTION.
what is dementia?
dementia affects the brain and will: have trouble understanding the world around them , communicating , reading , finding their way remembering recent events
