Why do sociologists argue against “common sense”?
Common sense explanations only bound up with belief of a particular society in a particular time period and doesn’t consider the change in society.
How might the family and the education system relate to each other?
-The wealth of which you grew up with (opportunities)
-Socialisation= primary is family and secondary is school/work
-The teaching they grew up with will impact education and behaviour.
-how much parents care about about education/engagement.
What was Lombroso’s theory?
He said that he could see criminals by their physical features. However, this led to smaller minorities being unfairly targeted
What are naturalistic explanations ?
Those which assume that various kind of human behaviour are natural or based on innate biological characteristics.
How does socialisation and identity relate to one and other?
The way you are socialised from a young age will form your identity later in life. Everyone is socialised differently which forms different identities and culture in society
Why would some sociologists argue against naturalistic explanations.
There are wide differences between societies in terms of customs, values, beliefs and social behaviour. So most are learnt by the individual.
What is meant by ‘nature vs nature’?
This is the debate of whether we are raised by our genes our experience
What is the case study of Oxana Malaya and what does it tell us.
This case study questions if children who are wild and have adapted wild behaviours can rehabilitate into ‘normal’ human society.
Name values of society.
Education, murder(not allowed). assault. voting.
Name norms of society.
Saying hello/goodbye, eating a the table, not playing music out loud in public, queuing, being respectful
How does socialisation link to our norms, values and customs?
Through socialisation it is passed on by learning it becomes a tradition.
Are values and norms the same in all societies?
Different societies will have different norms values and traditions but the norms in your society is the same for everyone.
E.g. In Britain a guinea pig is a pet but in Ecuador it is a delicacy to eat
What are Examples of formal agencies of control.
Police, judges, school and the government.
What are sanctions used by formal agencies of control.
-Police can arrest and fine you as deterrent.
-A sentence or jail time given by a judge.
-Detentions/exclusions are given by teachers but you can also be given rewards and good grades.
-Government create laws to keep order.
