Unit 1 - Introduction Flashcards
What are four types of biological data?
-Ratios
-Intervals
-Ordinal
-Nominal
What are examples of non-parametric tests?
-Mann Whitney
-Wilcoxon signed-rank
What are dependent variables?
Is the variable that is being measured in our observations
What are independent variables?
An explanatory factor in a model
What is continuous data? (Ratio data in SPSS)
Infinite number of values between two points eg. length
What is discrete data?
Is observations that exist on a limited number of values eg. number of teeth
Describe ranked or ordinal data.
Eg. Stress levels, where no stress is 0 and highly stressed is 5
What are examples of categorical qualitative data?
-Nominal data, which is unranked categories, gender
-Ordinal data, which is ranked category, age
What are examples of scale quantitative data?
Interval data- no fixed origin or fixed distance, temperature
Ratio data- fixed origin, fixed distance
age (yrs) length (cm)
Describe parametric statistics.
-Make assumptions about the data
-Data must follow normal distribution
-Powerful
Describe non-parametric statistics.
-Does not make assumptions about the data
-Data usually transformed into ranks
-Less powerful
