Hazards
An agent that has the potential to cause damage/harm/ compromise
to people, property or/and the environment
Risk
When there is exposure to a situation involving danger
Emergency
“a serious, unexpected, and often dangerous situation requiring immediate action”
Disaster
It is a sudden event which causes loss of life and/ or damage
Vulnerability
the quality or state of being exposed to the possibility of being attacked or harmed, either physically or emotionally
Man-made disasters
FAMINE INDUSTRIAL ACCIDENTS TRANSPORTATION ACCIDENTS POLLUTION ENVIRONMENTAL DAMAGE FIRE (SOME)

Earthquakes

Extreme temperature

Predisaster
This determines the effect of the impact of the disaster.
These include: Geological hazards Disaster plan review Disaster training Public Education
Warning phase
The period of first possible danger.
Communities have to be well informed about the intensity and likely duration
Impact phase
This is when the disaster is actually striking.
Little can be done to mitigate against damage
Emergency phase
Begins at the end of the impact and continues
until immediate threat has passed and community is organized for recovery (24 -48 Hours)
