unit 1 interactions and ecosystems Flashcards
what are the four basic needs
Food, water, air, energy
Explain what an adaptation is and provide 1 example of how organisms adapt to their environments.
an inherited characteristic that helps the organism survive elephant flap their ears to cool down
what are the 3 symbiotic relationships?
mutualism both benefit commensalism on benefits and the other is not affected parasitism one benefits the other is harmed
How do human needs and wants impact the natural environments?
Pollution habitat destruction waste disposal
what is Sustainability?
resources of nature that can be renewed easily and waste is easily absorbed
What is an ecological footprint and how is it calculated?
the area of food water and materials needed for one person is calculated by adding up all their demands
what are the 3 R’s
reduce reuse recycle
what is the difference between biotic and abiotic
biotic the living parts of an ecosystem abiotic the non-living parts of an ecosystem
what are 3 biotic parts of an ecosystem
producers consumers and decomposers
what are 3 abiotic parts of a system
water rocks air
Where do the producers get the food they need?
photosynthesis
Precipitation falling to the earth with high levels of pollutants (sulphur and nitrogen) is called
bioaccumulation
How does bioaccumulation affect the food chain?
if a mouse eats an ant that has been poisoned its body absorbs the poison and if the eagle eats the mouse it could die
Describe the difference between;
a. Extinction
b. Endangered
c. Extirpation
extinction the species no longer exists Endangered at risk of extinction Extirpation the species is fine
What are the four different types of ecosystem (environmental) monitoring techniques
captive breeding zoos and parks biodiversity banks wildlife corridors
