What is development?
Happens from head to toe, from inside to the outside, in the same sequence but at different rates - areas of development are dependant on and influence each other
What is growth?
The process of developing physically (getting taller, losing/gaining weights ageing), mentally (talking thinking + reasoning)for spiritually (understanding and believing in yourself)
Occurs from birth to adulthood
Definition of a life stage
The ages + stages we go through as we learn and grow, from infancy to adulthood
Definition of life span
The length of time for which a person lives or functions
What is a developmental milestone
Things most children can do by a certain age eg: walkstalk
What are the 4 primitive reflexes that infants are born with?
Rooting reflex, grasp reflex, startle reflex, walking reflex

Walking, climbing, crawling

Definition of gross motor skills
Large movements that involve using the large muscles of the body
Definition of fine motor skills
Smaller movements that require more precise directing (dexterity) and use smaller muscles.

Physical and emotional changes that mark a transition to adulthood
What are the 4 areas of development
Physical→ gross+ fine motor skills
intellectual → development of language-thinking +memory
Emotional→ learning to understand feelings
Social development → forming relationships + learning to be self sufficient
Characteristics of physical maturity during early adulthood (19-45)
-Hand eye coordination at its best
-grown to full height
- maximum physical strength+stamina have been reached
- women are most fertile
What is perimenopause?
A time in a women’s life that leads to menopause
Signs of perimenopause
- Night sweats = disruption of sleep
- hot flushes
- mood swings
- irregular/less regular periods
- weight gain
What is menopause
When menstruation stops completely = women no longer able to have children.
What are the physical effects of ageing
- weight gain
- loss of elasticity in skin=wrinkles
- greying+thinning of hair=hair loss
- hearing loss
- eyesight deteriorates
- difficulties with fine and gross motor skills
What are the main effects of ageing
-Hair goes grey, falls out and is thinner
- men go bald
-weight gain
-loss of skin elasticity
-menstruation ends for women
