Unit 1: Human Cells: Chapter 5: Human genomics Flashcards
Genome
All of an organism’s hereditary information encoded in its DNA. DNA composed of combination of genes that code for proteins and other non coding regions.
Human genomics
Sequencing of nucleotide base molecules along length of individual genes & eventually the whole human genome. This information can then be directly related to each gene’s function.
Genomic sequencing
Process to determine the sequence of nucleotide base molecules all the way along individual genes and ultimately along the entire genome.
Bioinformatics
Science of combined molecular biology, statistical analysis & computer technology. Enables rapid mapping, sequencing & comparison of DNA on huge scale.
Pharmacogenetics
Use of genome information in choice of pharmaceutical drugs on diverse members of human population. Also includes study of drugs’ effects on different patients.
e.g. warfarin caries in effect depending on persons DNA profile.
