Pure Food and Drug Act of 1906
- forbade the manufacturing or transport or sale of mislabeled or adulterated food or drugs and poisonous patent medicines
- gave the government broad powers to ensure the safety and efficacy of drugs in order to abolish the “patent” drug trade
- paved the way for the eventual creation of the FDA
Harrison Narcotics Act of 1914
stated that opium could no longer be purchased without a prescription
Federal Food, Drug, and Cosmetic Act of 1938
- Mandated tests for drug toxicity and provided means for recall of drugs
- established procedures for introducing new drugs; gave FDA the power of enforcement
EMTALA

Comprehensive legislation designed to protect people with disabilities against discrimination
PPACA (Patient Protection and Affordable Care Act)

- Nicknamed “ObamaCare”.
- Largest healthcare reform since medicare
Stark law/ EPRA
makes it illegal for a physician to refer a patient to a health care facility in which the physician (or a family member) has a financial interest
