Unit 1: Global Change Flashcards
What is Tragedy of the Commons
Individuals will use shared/public resources in their own self interest, degrading them
What are Externalities?
Implications that are not accounted for in the price(Unintended side effects)
What is Sustainability?
Living on Earth in a way that allows humans to use its resources without depriving future generations of those resources
What are the layers of the Atmosphere?
Troposphere
Stratosphere
Mesosphere
Thermosphere
Exosphere
What gases make up the atmosphere?
78% Nitrogen
21% Oxygen
1% Other gases
What is the Troposphere?
Ground-Level
“Bad Ozone” = Pollution
Cold = Temperature decreases
Holds majority of atmospheric molecules
What is the Stratosphere?
Planes
Hot = Temperature and Altitude increase
Good Ozone = Protects against UV
What is the Mesosphere?
Middle
Coldest Layer = Temperature decreases
Meteors burn up
What is the Thermosphere?
Hottest layer = Temperature increases
Northern Lights
What is the exosphere?
Satellites orbit
Outermost layer
What are the 3 Ozone-Depleting Substances (ODS)?
Chlorofluorocarbons (CFS)
Hydrocloroflurocarbons (HCFS)
Halons
What are ODS and CFS?
Coolants
Montreal Protocol
Canada
Phase out ozone deprecating substances (CFC’s)
Kyoto Protocol
Japan
Reduces greenhouse gas emissions
CO2 NO2
CH4 (Methane)
Paris Agreement
Long term temperature goal to keep global temperature below 2 degrees Celsius
What is anthropogenic?
Man made
What are examples of Anthropogenic
Cars
Facories
Deforestation
Fossil fuel usage
What keeps us warm?
The GreenHouse Effect
What is the GreenHouse Effect?
Infrared radiation hits the greenhouse molecules causing them to vibrate and warm the air
GreenHouse Effect Steps
- Solar radiation passed through the atmosphere and warms the Earth’s atmosphere
- The energy is absorbed by Earth’s surface and radiated as infrared
- GreenHouse gases absorb most of this energy
What greenhouse gas is the most abundant?
Water vapor
GreenHouse Gas equation
New - Old over Old times a 100
What happens when sea ice and glaciers melt?
Less dense water in polar regions which decreased the sinking of colder water and slows down ocean currents
What is the difference between ice caps and sea ice?
Ice cap is on land
Sea ice is on water(ocean)
