Q

what are the parts of a microscope?

A

eyepiece - contains one lens and is mounted at the end of a tube

stage - holds the slide or object you are looking at

base - supports the microscope and usually holds a lamp or mirror that shines light through the object

nosepiece - holds one or more lenses that can magnify an object up to 400 times

adjustment - knobs - helps you focus the lenses

17
Q

what is a balance used for?

A

to measure the amount of matter in an abject

measured in grams or kilograms

18
Q

what is a variable?

A

vary=to change

something that can change during an experiment

19
Q

what are the steps to the scientific method?

A
1- OBSERVE and ASK questions
2- Form a HYPOTHESIS
3- PLAN and experiment
4- CONDUCT an experiment
5- Draw CONCLUSIONS & COMMUNICATE the results
20
Q

what does “using numbers” to measure mean?

A

to use numbers not objects (pennies, apples, etc)

21
Q

what does “to compare” mean?

A

to estimate or measure the differences or similarities between objects

22
Q

what does “classify” mean?

A

arrange in categories according to shared qualities or characteristics

23
Q

what does it mean to “interpret data”?

A

to explain the meaning of gathered information

24
Q

what does ‘infer” mean?

A

to draw conclusions about something by using gathered data or previous knowledge

25
Q

what does to “predict” mean?

A

using your knowledge to make a guess

26
Q

plan and conduct a simple investigation

A

think about and plan a study that a scientist does

27
Q

what is a HYPOTHESIS?

A

a possible answer to a question that can be tested

28
Q

what are control variables

A

items that go unchanged in an experiment

29
Q

what are OBSERVATIOS?

A

information from your senses

to observe is to look at closely

30
Q

what is to Draw CONCLUSIONS?

A

by examining the data, an experiment either supported or disproved the hypothesis

31
Q

how do we communicate results in the lab?

A

we gather, record and display data (making charts, comparing, classifying)
