Unit 1 - Getting Ready for Science Flashcards
Investigation
looking into how something works
inquiry/ inquiry skills
the skills someone uses to study something closely
observe
watch something closely
measure
calculate the size or amount of an object
gather, record and display data
get information, write it down and put it into a model or graph
what is a thermometer used for?
to measure the temperature of liquids and air
what is water’s boiling and freezing point?
boils - 212 degrees Fahrenheit (100 degrees Celsius)
freezes - 32 degrees Fahrenheit (0 degrees Celsius)
what is a dropper used for?
to move small amounts of liquid or to measure volume by counting drops
what is a tape measure used for?
to measure the length of curved or irregular surfaces
what is a spring scale used for?
to measure forces, such as weight or friction
measures in units Newtons
what is a ruler used for?
measures the length and width of objects in centimeters and millimeters
what is a measuring cup used for?
to measure the volume of liquids
measured in liters and millimeters
what are forceps used for?
to help pick up or hold small objects
what is a hand lens used for?
to make objects appear larger and help you see more detail
what is a microscope used for?
helps you to look at very small things; it can magnify objects thousands of times
what are the parts of a microscope?
eyepiece - contains one lens and is mounted at the end of a tube
stage - holds the slide or object you are looking at
base - supports the microscope and usually holds a lamp or mirror that shines light through the object
nosepiece - holds one or more lenses that can magnify an object up to 400 times
adjustment - knobs - helps you focus the lenses
what is a balance used for?
to measure the amount of matter in an abject
measured in grams or kilograms
what is a variable?
vary=to change
something that can change during an experiment
what are the steps to the scientific method?
1- OBSERVE and ASK questions 2- Form a HYPOTHESIS 3- PLAN and experiment 4- CONDUCT an experiment 5- Draw CONCLUSIONS & COMMUNICATE the results
what does “using numbers” to measure mean?
to use numbers not objects (pennies, apples, etc)
what does “to compare” mean?
to estimate or measure the differences or similarities between objects
what does “classify” mean?
arrange in categories according to shared qualities or characteristics
what does it mean to “interpret data”?
to explain the meaning of gathered information
what does ‘infer” mean?
to draw conclusions about something by using gathered data or previous knowledge
what does to “predict” mean?
using your knowledge to make a guess
plan and conduct a simple investigation
think about and plan a study that a scientist does
what is a HYPOTHESIS?
a possible answer to a question that can be tested
what are control variables
items that go unchanged in an experiment
what are OBSERVATIOS?
information from your senses
to observe is to look at closely
what is to Draw CONCLUSIONS?
by examining the data, an experiment either supported or disproved the hypothesis
how do we communicate results in the lab?
we gather, record and display data (making charts, comparing, classifying)
