Unit 1 Geometric Optics Flashcards
The two laws of reflection
1) the incident ray, the reflected ray and the normal are all in the same plane
2) the angle of incidence is equal to the angle of reflection
Refraction
Refraction is the change in direction of a light ray caused by a change in speed when light moves from one optical medium to another
Optical density
A measure of the refractive power of a medium. The higher the optical density of the medium, the more the light is refracted or decelerated as it moves through the medium
Refractive index
The refractive index is the ratio of the speed of light in air to the speed of light though another medium
Normal (N)
This is an imaginary line perpendicular to the surface between two different optical media
Angle of incidence (theta i)
The is the angle between the incident ray and the normal surface
Angle of refraction (theta r)
This is the angle between the refracted ray and the normal on the surface
