Unit 1- Fundamentals of Organic Chemistry Flashcards
A facility that provides controlled conditions in which scientific or technological research, experiments, and
measurement may be performed.
Laboratory
A laboratory specific for chemistry research. This laboratory has all the necessary equipment for preparation
of samples and standards for various analyses of liquid and solid samples. The laboratory houses traditional equipment including
glassware, muffle furnace, centrifuge, and ovens.
Chemsitry Laboratory
Frequently used as heat
source in the absence of flammable liquid.
Bunsen Burner
Used for measuring mass usually in large amount
Top-loading Balance
Used to measure
mass in small amounts with high accuracy
Analytical Balance
Used to cover the mouth of the test tube
Cork
Used to hold and mix small amount of liquids, and in carrying out micro to semi-micro scale reactions
Test tubes
Used to hold test tube, particularly when hot
Test tube holder
Used to hold hot crucibles and beakers
Crucible tong
Used to hold, mix, and heat liquids
Beakers
Used to hold and mix chemicals (the narrow mouth is to facilitate mixing without spilling)
Erlenmeyer Flask
Also known as reaction flask, which are made up of inert
glass material that can withstand high pressure and temperature
Round-bottom Flask
Used to measure precise volume of liquid
Graduated Cylinder
Used to prepare solutions to an accurate volume
Volumetric Flask
Used to measure accurate volume of liquid
Measuring pipette (pipet)
Used for holding chemicals when heating at very high temperature (ignition)
Crucible
Used to heat
Evaporating Dish
Used to hold solids while they are weighed or to cover beakers
Watch Glass
Used with a ring stand to hold glassware, such as beaker and funnel
Ring Clamp
Used to support container on ring clamp while being heated
Wire Gauze
Used to hold or clamp laboratory glassware in place, so it does not fall down or come apart
Ring Stand
Separate various components of a fluid by spinning the fluid at high speed within a container
Centrifuge
The control of exposure to potentially hazardous substances to attain an acceptably low risk of exposure.
