Unit 1 Fundamentals of IT Flashcards
what are computer components?
items which together form a computer system
explain input devices?
device that allows the user which may be another computer or a measuring device to give instruction or provide data in a computer
output device is,
device that enable computer system to provide information, data or instructions to another user, which may be computer or human
what is a single device that can both receive and display data?
touch screen
name 5 input devices
keyboard
sensors
VDU
Scanners
Mouse
what is infrared?
Uses infrared radiation (IR) that send out infrared light which travels through the glass of the screen. if screen is touch receiver collects less light and complex mathematical equations calculate the location of touch.
Explain resistive touch?
Use a glass panel covered by thin flexible film which is covered in metallic coat with a small electric charge. When screen is touched two metallic coatings contact and change the electric charge and this helps to identify the touch point.
Capacitive touch?
Use a glass panel with an electrode layer covered with protective layer. When the screen is touched it reacts to the body’s capacity to electrical charge. This is detected by sensors at the four corners of the screen.
Name 5 output devices?
VDU
Printer
Plotters
Speakers
Braille Terminal
Name communication devices
Modem
Terminal adaptor
Wireless network cards
NIC
Wireless router
Hub
What does the NIC do?
Network Interface Card - enables computers to get connected to other computers in the network.
Explain modem
Even though it’s outdated now, it connects computers via telephone lines.
What is a Terminal Adaptor?
allows computers to link in an ISDN (integrated service digital network)
Explain Wireless router
Converts an internet connection to wireless connection; other devices in the network can communicate with each other via network.
What are wireless network cards?
Computers and other devices are able to send or receive wireless communication.
what does HUB do?
Multiple computers can communicate through one network.
What is motherboard?
Main printed circuit in personal computer. Connected via sockets.
What are the two types of computer storage?
Primary storage - locally stored within the computer
Secondary storage -additional storage (can be added and removed)
What are the types of primary storage?
Registers
RAM
ROM
Explain each primary storage
Registers - small, fast and used chiefly by the CPU to store
RAM- fast but slower than those within CPU and larger in size. Holds almost every data and instruction that computer needs.
ROM- contains instructions for basic inputs/outputs (BIOS) programme.
Name secondary storage devices.
Flash drives
Cloud storage
Solid state discs
Optical hard drives
What is flash drive?
A portable computer device that uses slash memory.
A - durability/ portable/ speed
W - Expensive
What does Cloud storage do?
Allows to save data and files in an off-site location that you can access through connection.
A- disaster recovery/ access anywhere/ low cost
W- Lack of total control/ requires internet
Solid state discs are…
Replace HDDs in computers and perform the same basic functions.
A-speed/ durability/ cost
W- lifespan
