Unit 1 - Foundations of Chemistry Flashcards
What is matter?
Anything that occupies mass and space.
What is the study of chemistry?
The study of composition, properties, and interactions of matter.
What is a solid?
Matter that is rigid and has a definite shape.
What is a liquid?
Matter that flows and takes the shape of it’s container.
What is a gas?
Matter that takes both the shape and the volume of it’s container.
What is the fourth state of matter?
Plasma.
Although plasma is most similar to a gas, how is it different from the rest of the states of matter?
Plasma has significant amounts of electrically charged particles that are able to move more freely.
What is the mass of an object?
Mass is the amount of matter inside of an object.
What is the weight of an object?
The force that gravity exerts on an object. It is directly proportional to the object’s mass.
State the “Law of Conservation of Matter.”
No matter what physical or chemical change happens, the amount of matter present never changes.
What is an atom?
The smallest particle of an element that has the properties of that element.
What is a molecule?
A molecule is two or more atoms joined together with chemical bonds.
What is a pure substance?
A substance that has constant composition. All types of a pure substance will have the same makeup and properties.
What is an element?
A pure substance that cannot be broken down into simpler substances.
What is a compound?
A pure substance that can be broken down into simpler substances.
