Unit 1 Exam Flashcards
Abiotic factors
An abiotic factor is a non-living part of an ecosystem that shapes its environment.
Biome
A biome is a large community of vegetation and wildlife adapted to a specific climate.
Biosphere
worldwide sum of all ecosystems
Consumer
A consumer in a food chain is a living creature that eats organisms from a different population. A consumer is a heterotroph and a producer is an autotroph.
Detritivore
an organism (such as an earthworm or a fungus) that feeds on dead and decomposing organic matter.
Ecological niche
position of a species within an ecosystem, describing both the range of conditions necessary for persistence of the species, and its ecological role in the ecosystem.
Ecology
Ecology is the study of the relationships among living organisms, including humans, and their physical environment.
Ecosystem
An ecosystem is a geographic area where plants, animals, and other organisms, as well as weather and landscape, work together to form a bubble of life.
Environment
the circumstances, objects, or conditions by which one is surrounded. : the complex of physical, chemical, and biotic factors (such as climate, soil, and living things) that act upon an organism or an ecological community and ultimately determine its form and survival.
Food chain
the order of events in an ecosystem, where one living organism eats another organism, and later that organism is consumed by another larger organism. The flow of nutrients and energy from one organism to another at different trophic levels forms a food chain.
Food web
A food web consists of all the food chains in a single ecosystem.
Habitat
A habitat is a place where an organism makes its home. A habitat meets all the environmental conditions an organism needs to survive
Interspecific
Competition existing or occurring between different species.
Intraspecific
Competition between the same species
Microhabitat
a habitat which is of small or limited extent and which differs in character from some surrounding more extensive habitat. An example of a microhabitat would be the cool, dark and moist conditions provided underground for ants, worms, and moles. A single tree contains multiple microhabitats
