Unit 1: Energy Systems Flashcards
What is respiration? What are the two types of respiration?
Respiration - when the body makes energy (ATP) it can use to perform tasks eg muscles contracting
Aerobic - energy made with oxygen
Anaerobic - energy made without oxygen
What is ATP?
ATP = adenosine tri-phosphate
Form of energy stored in the body
What does resynthesis of energy mean?
Body making more energy (ATP) through respiration.
What is anaerobic respiration?
Producing energy (ATP) without the presence of oxygen
What is aerobic respiration?
Producing energy (ATP) with oxygen
What is the equation for anaerobic respiration?
glucose = lactic acid + energy (ATP)
What is the equation for aerobic respiration?
glucose + oxygen = carbon dioxide + water + energy (ATP)
What is lactic acid?
Waste product of anaerobic respiration that causes cramps/fatigue in the muscles
How long does anaerobic respiration provide us with energy (ATP) for?
1-60 secs of high intensity effort
How long does aerobic respiration provide us with energy (ATP) for?
1min-several hours of medium/low intensity effort
