Unit 1 Energy, matter and systems Flashcards
What is energy?
Ability to do work, quantitative property that is transferred to a body or to a physical system
What are the kinetic energy’s?
heat, electricity, magnetism, and light
What are the energy of position?
Elastic Potential Energy.
Electrical (Electromagnetic) Potential Energy.
Gravitational Potential Energy.
Nuclear Potential Energy.
Geosphere
includes the rocks and minerals on Earth – from the molten rock and heavy metals in the deep interior of the planet to the sand on beaches and peaks of mountains
Biosphere
made up of the parts of Earth where life exists
Hydrosphere
all the waters on the earth’s surface
Atmosphere
layer of gas or layers of gases that envelop a planet
What is a system?
the sum of all interconnected workings of the Atmosphere, Hydrosphere, Geosphere, and Biosphere.
What is a boundary for a system?
a conceptual line that divides the system that you want to study from ‘everything else’
What is matter?
matter is any substance that has mass and takes up space by having volume.
What is an interaction for a system?
the way systems interact to achieve some common functional goal
What does conservation of energy mean?
energy cannot be created or destroyed, but can be altered from one form to another.
What are the properties of a system?
volume, temperature, pressure and density etc.
What is an example of a system in science?
muscular system, nervous system, reproductive system, skeletal system, and space system
