Unit 1: Ecosystem Flashcards
ecosystem
specific location with interacting biotic and abiotic features
competitive exclusion principle
2 species competing for same resource can’t coexist
resource partitioning
two species evolve to reduce limiting resource overlap
competitive exclusion
inferior species driven to extinction
what causes biomes?
biomes are categorized by combinations of average annual temp. and rain. different climates= different organisms
albedo
the percentage of incoming sunlight reflected from a surface
ex: snow and ice reflect more than dark objects
terrestrial biomes defined by:
- dominant plant growth forms
- 9 biomes
- temp and precipitation
tundra
-underlying subsoil is permafrost: a permanently frozen layer of soil
boreal forest
-subarctic biome with very cold climate & nutrient-poor soil
temperate rainforest
- mild temp and high precipitation
- coastal biome
ex: northern California to Alaska
temperate seasonal forest
- warm summers, cold winters
- moderate rain
- eastern US
woodland/shrubland
- common wildfires
- hot, dry summers & mild, rainy winters
ex: southern California
temperate grassland/cold desert
- harsh winters, dry summer
- lowest average rainfall
ex: Great Plains
tropical rainforest
- warm & wet biome
- highest biodiversity
- Amazon
tropical seasonal forest/savanna
- warm temps and wet/dry seasons
- fertile soil, but low rain
ex: Sub-Saharan Africa
