Unit 1 Earth,Sun And Moon Flashcards
Matter
Definition: Material (stuff ) in an object, made from atoms and molecules.
Mass
The measurement of matter.
Gravity
Force of attraction between objects.
Weight
Measurement of gravity pulling on mass.
Vector
Arrow that represents magnitude (strength)and direction of force.
Celestial object
Objects in outer space (ex;stars, planet’s,moons, black holes etc.)
Revolution
The movement of a celestial object in a elliptical path around another.
Orbit
The curved path of a celestial object around a star, planet, moon, etc.
Axis
An imaginary line through the center of a celestial body about which it rotates.
Gravitational force
A force of attraction between objects in space dependent on mass and distance.
Rotation
The action of spinning around an axis.
What 2 factors determine the Strength of gravity?
The 2 factors that determine the strength of gravity are
(1) mass
(2) distance
Eclipse
To cover
Lunar eclipse = “moon covered”
Moon is covered by the earths shadow
Penumbra
Is a shadow cast by earth or moon over an area experiencing a partial eclipse.
