The Code of Hammurabi
One of the earliest sets of laws. It was based on the system of retribution (eye for an eye)
Mosaic Law
Based on the ten commandments
Greek Law
First form of democracy (also had Jury Duty)
Roman Law
First legal advisors (Lawyers)
Rule of Law
1) No one is above the law
2) Habeus Corpus: anyone arrested sees a judge within a reasonable amount of time
3) Open Government: Laws are accessible, fair and efficient
Civil Law
Originally used in Canada. Judges travelled around and gave any punishment.
Common-Law
Judges came together and began enforcing common punishments
Statute Law
Considers Statutes, which are written by legislative bodies and sets forth general laws used for specific cases
Constitutional Law
Establishes, allocates, and limits public power
Magna Carta
No one is above the law
Everyone is right to a fair trial
Everyone is equal under the law
