Why were immigrants pouring into Canada in the early 1900’s?
-most were recruited to go to the rich farmlands of the west; however many were too poor to buy the equipment and and supplies they needed and never got there.
What did the immigrants that were too poor to farm do instead?
-They found jobs in lumber camps, factories, and mines, some even worked on the railroads
Why did Canadian manufacturers do so well as the population grew?
Because they made: tractors, threshing machines, buggies, bicycles, automobiles, nails, wire, pots and pans, railway tracks, locomotives, flour, canned meats, vegetables, brooms, stoves, clothing etc. so with more and more people coming in the supply and demand needs were getting higher as well.
As Canada grew rapidly, what are some of the jobs that were employing a lot of people?
Digging sewers, paving streets, and building street car lines
Where did the store owners live?
In Big houses on tree lined streets with servants
Where did the “city dwellers” live
In the slums
What happened with the housing supply?
There were not enough houses being built compared to the number of people that were immigrating into Canada, so because that many of the immigrants were poorly paid, many people could not afford decent homes, and as many as 10 immigrants would live in the same run-down house.
What did city council try its best to provide?
- Electric lights and clean water
- Established public health clinics
- Improved public transportation
- To set up parks and playgrounds
When the Europeans first came to Canada what did Ontario and Quebec look like? according to this how did it effect the economy?
They were covered in forests; therefore, forestry was a big business because of all the lumber they needed
What happened when there were no longer big trees to be used for lumber in the East?
Lumber jacks began moving to the West to the cedar and Douglas firs in BC
Where. what, and when were the two major gold rushes?
the caribou in BC during the 1860’s for gold and 1898 Klondike gold rush in the northern territories
After the need of materials to be mined what happened?
The St. Lawrence lowlands had an abundance of supplies which cause more and more towns called “mining towns”
What was the relationship between the french and the English Canadians?
They clashed over the ties they had with Britain, however all Canadians were more concerned about the down under: America
What are the 5 causes that contributed to the outbreak of WWI?
- The emergence of German as powerful
- By 1817 German chancellor Otto Von Bismark had united most of the german speaking people into a new nation that wanted to be known as a power house so they built a stronger army and navy - Clash of Empires
- Britain, France, Spain and Portugal controlled large empires with colonies in Asia and Africa. Germany wanted colonies as well which caused conflict between them - Naval and Arms Race
- In the early 1900’s Britain had the strongest Navy in the world, but Germany started building a more powerful navy.Germany also raced against Russia and France for the most powerful army - Nationalism
- Wars are often caused by countries that prize national interests. European countries wanted to show their identity - Alliance System
- There were two rival Alliances
- The triple Alliance: Germany, Austria/Hungary, And Italy
- The triple Entente: France, Russia, Britain
Summarize the Boer War
1899, Britain was at war with South Africa over Precious materials and land. Britain requested that Canada send over some troops. the imperialists (english) wanted to help but the Nationalists (french) Did not want any part. Laurier made a compromise and paid for 1000 volunteers to go help. this made neither sides happy which caused conflict between them
