Unit 1: Directional Terminology Flashcards
1
Q
What are the three directional planes?
A
- Median: divides the head, body, or limb into equal right and left halves
-Sagittal: passes through the head, body, or limb parallel to the median plane - Transverse: transects the head, body, or limb perpendicular to its own long axis
- Dorsal: runs at right angle to the median and transverse planes, dividing the body or head into dorsal and ventral portions
2
Q
Describe Dorsal and Ventral
A
- Dorsal: “top” of the head, back, tail. “front” or “top” surface of the foot
- Ventral: “underside” of the head, truck, and tail
3
Q
Describe Medial and Lateral
A
- Medial: toward the median plane
- Lateral: away from the median plane (toward the side of the truck, head, or limb)
4
Q
Describe Cranial and Caudal
A
- Cranial: Towards the head. “Front” surface of the limbs
- Caudal: Toward the tail. “Back” surface of the limbs
5
Q
Describe Rostral and Caudal
A
- Rostral: Only used in the head region, towards the nose.
- Caudal: Used in head and body region, towards the tail.
6
Q
Describe Proximal and Distal
A
- Proximal: Closer to the main body mass
- Distal: Farther away from the main body mass
7
Q
Describe Palmar and Plantar
A
- Palmar: ‘Bottom” of the front feet
- Plantar: “Bottom” of the hind feet
8
Q
Axis, Axial, and Abaxial
A
- Axis: Central line of the body
- Axial: towards the axis
- Abaxial: Away from the axis
9
Q
Describe Flexion and Extension
A
- Flexion: Act of bending or condition of being bent
- Extension: Two ends of any jointed part are drawn away from each other (limb into a straight condition)
10
Q
Abduct, Adduct, and Circumduct
A
- Abduct: Draw away from the median plane
- Adduct: Draw towards the median plane
- Circumduct: circular movement of a limb
11
Q
Rotation, Supination, and Pronation
A
- Rotation: Movement of a part on its long axis
- Supination: Lateral rotation of the limbs causing the palmar/plantar surface to face medially (lying on back)
- Pronation: Medial rotation of the limb causing the palmar/plantar surface to face laterally
12
Q
Anterior, Posterior, Superior, and Interior
A
- Anterior: Towards the front
- Posterior: Towards the back
- Superior: Up
- Interior: Down
