Dependent population
The percentage of very young and very old peoples within a population that relies on the working population for support
Population density
The number of people located within a given area.
Life expectancy
The average number of years a baby born into a population can expect to live
Fertility rate
The average number of babies born to women within a given population
Age cohort
A measurement of age groups, usually in five years, used in population pyramids.
Infant mortality rate (IMR)
The number of deaths of babies before the age of one - expressed per 1000 population/year
Crude Death Rate (CDR)
The number of deaths within a given population in year - expressed per 1000 population
Population growth
The percentage at which a population increases or decreases each year.
Ageing population
A population in which the proportion of people in the older cohorts is increasing
Natural increase
The difference between the CBR and the CDR in a given population
Crude Birth Rate (CBR)
The number of live births within a given population in a year - expressed per 1000 population
Baby boom
Term given to the rise in birth rates following the end of the Second World War - in Australia refers to babies born between 1946 and 1966.
Replacement rate
The fertility rate (average 2.1 babies) required for women within a given population in order to maintain the size of that population.
Demographic Transition Model
A method that shows the various stages through which populations may pass
Age structure
The percentage of people at each age level within a given population
