Unit 1: Covalent Radius Flashcards
1
Q
Define covalent radius
A
a measure of the size of an atom
2
Q
What is C.R meausred in?
A
pm or Anstrom
3
Q
What happens to C.R across a period?
A
C.R decreases
4
Q
What happens to C.R down a group?
A
C.R increases
5
Q
Why does C.R decrease across a period?
A
When the atomic number increases the number of protons increase.
More protons = stronger nuclear charge.
Stronger nuclear charge = more electrons attracted to the nucleus.
More attraction = tighter pull
Tighter pull = smaller atom
6
Q
Why does C.R increase down a group?
A
There are more full occupied shells.
More occupied shells = more shielding.
More shielding = less attraction to the nucleus
Less attraction = larger atom
