Gnostics believed man could be enlightened by a divine spark of knowledge brought by a heavenly revealer (Hellenistic thought)

Contrasting of two opposing ideas

- ensured people kept law and tradition
Sadducees
- very powerful
- rich landowners
- controlled the temple
- unpopular
- compromised with Romans
Essenes
- ‘Pious ones’
- monastic group
- saw themselves as the true people of God
- lived a strict religious life
Zealots
- revolutionaries/freedom fighters
- despised Pharisees and Sadducees - felt they accepted Roman rule
- lead unsuccessful uprisings
- hated Romans and Roman rule
