Unit 1-Concept 3: Matter Flashcards
Chemistry
The study of matter
Matter
Anything that has mass or volume
Mass
A measure of the amount of matter
Volume
A measure of how much space something takes up
Atoms
The building blocks of matter
Atom
Smallest unit of an element that maintains the identity of an element
Element
A pure substance that cannot be broken down into anything simpler or more stable
On the periodic table
Compound
A pure substance that can be broken down into simple and more stable substances
Chemically combined elements
Can be chemically broken down into simpler substances
Substance:
Means pure
Fixed composition throughout and same properties throughout
Ex: He, 02,
Mixture
Means combination
Variable composition throughout and each component retains its unique properties
Mixtures can be seperated into substances
Ex: Saltwater, lemonade, blood, air
Homogeneous mixture
Even distribution/same
Appears blended
Can be physically broken down into different components
Solutions, aqeuous solutions and alloys
Solutions
one substance (solute) is dissolved into another (solvent)
Aqueous solution
When the solute is dissolved into water
Alloy
a solution of metals
Heterogeneous mixture
Uneven distribution/different
Can be physically broken down into different components
Components can often be seen
