Vocation
A person’s calling in terms of a carrer
Undergraduate
A university student who has NOT yet received a first degree
Public College
A college operated and financially supported by the state in which they are located.
Private College
A college that relies on endowments, tuition and fundraising campaigns. They do NOT receive government money.
For-Profit College
Refers to a type of college that is owned by a private company that makes a profit from your tuition and fees.
Graduate School
A program of study beyond a bachelor’s degree
PhD Program
A doctoral degree (PhD) is a degree that one earns after a master’s degree. A PhD entitles a person to use the title doctor.
Liberal Arts College
University where the academic focus is on developing the intellect and instruction in the humanities and sciences, rather than on training for a particular vocational, technical, or professional pursuit.
A University
A collection of colleges that has undergraduate programs which award bachelor’s degrees and graduate programs for masters’ degrees and doctorates.
Arts College
College for the fine arts.
Religious College
Schools that require learning around a specific religion
Single-Sex College
This is a college that accepts either women only or men only.
HBCU
Historically Black Colleges and Universities
Community College
a nonresidential college that offers courses to people living in a particular area.
Trade School
School provides students education and technical skills they need in order to perform the tasks of a particular job.
Internship
A type of work experience for entry-level job-seekers
Apprenticeship
A combination of classroom instruction and on-the-job training
Prep School
A school that prepares students for entrance to a higher school
Gap Year
A hiatus of schooling before or during college
FAFSA
Free Application for Federal Student Aid
Pell Grant
Money the government provides for students who need to pay for college.
Pell Grant

529 College Savings Plan
A state-sponsored investment plan that enables you to save money for a beneficiary and pay for education expenses.
529 Pre-Paid College Tuition Plan
Let you pay in advance for future college tuition and fees at the current rate, by purchasing units or credits
Work-Study
Provides part-time jobs for undergraduate and graduate students with financial need, allowing them to earn money to help pay education expenses
Subsidized Loan
Loans for undergraduate students with financial need, as determined by your cost of attendance minus expected family contribution and other financial aid (such as grants or scholarships).
Unsubsidized Loan
Loans for both undergraduate and graduate students that are not based on financial need.
Private Loan
A financing option for higher education
