Unit 1: Chemistry of Life Flashcards
List the levels of organization that make up an organism
Molecules, Cell Organelles, Cells, Tissues, Organs, Systems of Organs and Organisms.
Polar Molecule
Uniform distribution of electron density, dissolves in water
Non-polar molecule
Non-polar molecule, does not dissolve in water
Cohesion (Surface Tension)
Water sticking to water
Adhesion
Water striking between two things. Stronger bond than Cohesion.
High Specific Heat
Water that does not change easily and has to absorb more heat to increase in heat overall.
Less Dense as Solid
Solid water, Ice, Is less dense than liquid water.
Terrific Solvent
Dissolves things and is considered a universal solvent.
Hydrophobic
Does not dissolve in water.
Hydrophilic
Usually dissolves easily in water.
Solution
Uniform mixture of two or more substances.
Solute
What gets dissolved in water
Solvent
What does the dissolving (Liquids)
Hydrophobic
Does not dissolve in water.
Hydrophilic
Usually dissolves easily in water.
