Unit 1 (chemistry) Flashcards
Define: Atoms
The building blocks of matter; cannot be broken down into simpler substances.
Define: Elements
The names we give atoms with specific properties and each atom of a particular element has the same number of protons in the nucleus
Define: Molecules
Groups of atoms covalently bonded together. These may be atoms of the same element (e.g. diatomic molecules such as O2) or atoms of different elements (e.g. one molecule of water, H2O)
Define: Compounds
Chemical substances in which atoms of two or more DIFFERENT elements are bound together (e.g. NaCl)
Define: Chemical Property
Any property that describes how a substance reacts
with another substance when forming a new substance is a chemical
property.
Define: Physical Property
Observable or measurable properties without
forming a new substance is a physical property.
List the 10 categories of physical properties:
-boiling/condensation point
-melting/freezing point
-malleability
-ductility
-colour
-solubility
-crystal formation
-conductivity
-state
-magnetism
List the 7 categories of chemical properties:
-ability to burn
-flash point
-reaction with oxygen
-reaction with water
-reaction with acids
-reaction to heat
-reaction to litmus
What are the 4 classifications of matter?
Pure substance, Mixtures, Homogeneous, Heterogeneous
