Stress
The sum of biologic reactions that take place in response to stressors. Stress disturbs the organisms homeostasis and causes the body to attempt to adapt.
3 stages of illness
- Transition Stage: The onset of illness. Vague, nonspecific symptoms. Person may deny feeling ill, acknowledge that a health problem exists, and eventually self-medicate or seek help if it worsens.
- Acceptance Stage: Person assumes the “sick role”. Involves acknowledging illness and taking steps to become well. May use remedies from pharmacy or from home. Some delay seeing medical professionals for as long as possible due to fear of the problem and endergoing exams and diagnostic procedures.
- Convalescence Stage: Process of recovering after illness. If illness becomes chronic, recovery phase is replaced with Adaptation to limitations and positive use of remaining capabilities or Maladaptation (lack of adjustment).
GAS
ARE
General Adaptation Sydnrome- Happens in response to long term exposeure to stress like trauma, burns, infection, severe cold, and emotional upset.. 3 steps:
- Alarm Stage- Hormone release mobilizes body’s defenses. Nonspecific signs of illness such as slight rise in temperature, loss of energy, decreased apetite, and a general feeling of malaise occur.
- Resistance Stage- Body is battling for equilibrium. If this stage is excessive, response becomes maladaptive and a pathologic condition occurs, which may be in the form of a stress related disorder.
- Exhaustion Stage- Occurs if stressor is severe enough or present over a long enough time to deplete body’s resources for adaptation.
