Unit 1: Cells Flashcards
Cells
The most basic unit of life
Cell membrane
Controls what comes into and out of cells, found in both plant and animal cells
Cell walls
The ridged outer layer of a plant cell
Chloroplast
captures energy from the sun and uses it to produce food for plant cells
Chromatin
tiny strands inside the nucleus that contains the instructions for directing the cells functions
Cytoplasm
gel like substance where cells organelles are found
Endoplasmic Reticulum
passage ways that carry protein and other materials from part of a cell to another
Golgi Bodies
receive proteins and materials from the ER:;passages and then distributes them
Lysosomes
use chemicals the break down food and worn-out cell parts
Nucleolus
found inside the nucleus and produces ribosomes
Nucleus
contains DNA, which control functions of the cell
Mitochondria
produces energy a cell needs to carry out its function
Ribosomes
assembles amino acids to create protein
Vacuoles
stores food, water, waste, and other materials
