Unit 1- Cell Transport Flashcards
What is diffusion?
Diffusion is the movement of molecules from high concentration to low concentration across a selectively permeable membrane
Describe the cell membrane?
The cell membrane is made up of phospholipids and proteins and is selectively permeable.
What is osmosis?
Movement of water molecules from high water concentration to low water concentration across a selectively permeable membrane
What type or processes are diffusion and osmosis?
Passive processes, meaning they require no energy
What happens when a red blood cell is put in hypotonic solution?
Haemolyisis(it bursts)
What happens when a plant cell is put in hypertonic solution?
Cell becomes plasmolysed and tissue becomes flaccid
What is active transport?
Movement of molecules from low concentration to high concentration
