Unit 1 Cards Flashcards
Hosts (AKA End Devices, Clients)
connected computers on a network that participate directly in network communication
IP Address
identitfies the host and the network to which the host is attached
Servers
computers with software that allow them to provide information to other end devices on the network
Peer-to-Peer Network
computers that function as the servers and clients on a network
End Device
the source or destination of a message transmitted over the networok
Intermediary Devices
connect the individual end devices to the network
Examples of Intermediary Devices:
wireless routers, multilayer switch, LAN switch, firewall appliance, router
Media
provides the channel over which the message travels from source to destination
Three types of media used to interconnect devices in modern networks:
Metal wires within cables, glass or plalstic fibers within cables (fiber-optic cables), and wireless transmissions
End Devices:
desktop computers, laptops, printers, IP phones, wireless tablets
Topology Diagram
a diagram that provides an easy way to understand how devices connect in a large network
Network Interface Card (NIC)
physically connects the end device to their network
Interface
specialized ports on a networking device that conncet to individual networks
Physical Topology Diagrams
illustrate the physical location of intermediary devices and cable installation
logical topology diagram
illustrate devices, ports, and the addressing scheme of the network
