Unit 1 bio assumptions Flashcards
Evolutionary influences assumption
Individuals with characteristics most suited to their environment are more likely to have evolved, the more EVOLVED a person is the more likely they will survive in an ever changing environment.
Survival of the fittest
Genes within evolved families are more likely to be passed on to future generations to continue survival
Sexual selection
type of natural selection and competition for based on positive characteristics that aid reproductive success drive evolution
Localisation of brain function assumption
Certain functions e.g memory are in specific areas in the brain
Frontal lobe?
Front of brain
Problem solving
Parietal lobe?
Middle section
Receives incoming sensory info from skin relating to pleasure and pain
Occipital lobe?
Visual area, back of brain
Processes shape, colour and movement
Temporal lobe?
Auditory area, bottom of brain
Processing acoustic info
What is the orbitofrontal cortex (OFC) responsible for?
Impulse control
front of brain
OFC regarding relationship formation
OFC decides whether it is beneficial for the individual to act on a sexual stimulus based on rewards it will provide
What did Little et al 2011 find regarding OFC
Observing beauty in the opposite sex raises action of the OFC,
Evidence that bio has influence in relationship formation
OFC indicates if mate is desirable and individual will most likely act on this bio signal
What are neurotransmitters?
chemical messengers that are passed from PRESYNAPTIC neuron to the POSTSYNAPTIC neuron across the SYNAPSE
What happens across the synapse
the neurotransmitters change from electrical signals to chemical signals
Function of dopamine
controls bodily movements and emotional responses.
Dopamine deficiency is related to mental health conditions such as depression
Function of serotonin
affects both emotions and motor skills.
Serotonin is the chemical that supports SLEEPING, EATING & DIGESTION
