what is a critical period?
a period during someone’s development in which a particular skill or characteristic is believed to be most readily acquired
Universal grammar
All children are born with an innate ability to acquire, develop, and understand language.

Two-word stage
18 to 24 months
develop a greater understanding of syntactic and semantic relation
two-word construction mainly consist of noun and verb combinations
Telegraphic stage
24 to 30 months
communicate meaning by combining content words
omitting grammatical function worlds e.g. ‘i want to pat doggy’ and ‘i go shops’
Multi-word stage
around 30 months
begin using grammatical function words along with content words
sentences become more complex
their syntactic knowledge has increased
