What 2 words describe Sickle Cell Disease and why?
Perfusion – reduced perfusion to all body systems as sickled cells stick together
Pain – lack of perfusion leads to pain from hypoxia
What could put a patient in a crisis?
Infection, extreme temp, stress, high altitude, smoking, dehydration
What nursing interventions are necessary to care for a patient admitted in a sickle cell crisis?
Hydration, pain management, oxygen, warm room, no restricting clothes, no bending legs
Transfusion
List some complications of sickle cell disease and how nurses can prevent them from happening while caring for them in the hospital.
Respiratory infections: antibiotics, hydration, IS, TCDB.
DVT: hydration, ambulation
Stroke: hydration, transfusion
- Describe symptoms and treatment for the following:
-iron deficiency anemia:
spoon nails, fissures in mouth, weak, pallor, fatigue
Treat with foods: red meat, eggs, beans, leafy greens, raisins, or supplement or IV iron dextran
