Unit 1 - Anatomy for Sport and Exercise Science - Bone Structure and Growth Flashcards
Covers key words and processes for bone growth
What is the periosteum?
Outermost layer of the bone, responsible for providing oxygen and nutrients, removing waste and connecting with ligaments and tendons.
Name the outermost layer of the bone.
The periosteum.
What is compact bone?
The second layer of the bone, responsible for increasing strength and maintaining structure.
Name the second layer of the bone.
Compact bone.
What is cancellous bone?
Third layer of spongy bone that contains red bone marrow; which is responsible for the production of red blood cells.
Name the third layer of the bone.
Cancellous/spongy bone
What is the marrow cavity?
Innermost cavity within bone which contains yellow bone marrow, responsible for white blood cell production.
Name the innermost layer of the bone.
The marrow cavity
What is ossification?
The process that turns cartilage into bone.
What is the function of osteoblasts during bone growth?
Produce osteocytes on the bone surface.
What are osteocytes?
Mature bone cells.
What is the function of osteoclasts in a developing foetus?
Break down and remove old cartilage during ossification.
What is the function of osteclasts in an adult body?
Break down and remove spent bone tissue.
